Auto-Tune. Aim for R&B and use Auto-Tune. It works for a LOT of those acts!

Screaming your lyrics can be appropriate, at times, particularly if you can carry a tune while doing so (think “Immigrant Song” or “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, for example). And Rock & Roll isn’t the ONLY genre where a grating voice need not be an impediment to success. I know a lot of people who consider Lucinda Williams a wonderful singer, but to me her voice is nails on a chalkboard.

^^ (My one exception for Lucinda Williams is “Can’t Let Go.” I bought the album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road on the strength of my liking of that song, but found the rest of it unlistenable. Again, I know that’s my personal opinion and nothing more.)
