Yup, she understands–no specially-designated day is complete without sweets such as cake.
(perhaps Val didn’t want to buy cake due to the strange diet she wanted to inflict on her daughters?)

This is a big thing in many eastern European countries, it’s treated like Mothers Day in the US.

I happened to be working in China during International Women’s Day a couple of years ago; I had never heard of International Women’s Day before that. At my workplace every woman was greeted at the door and given a long-stemmed rose, and treated to a half-day off, with pay. After I returned to the US, I found that it was not observed here. This year, however, there are some observances set up in my company.
Edited to add, we still have to make our own cake tho! LOL
