Suspend all Federal Powers until all the rats are ferreted out…We are already sending State Guards to fight overseas for National defense…Let the states take a more primordial role…
BCS, you are primordially a nice person. I like Bennett’s technique too. Compare it to Mike Thompson’s - which I think is primordially computer-generated. (Thanks for my new word, Peter-Great - I’m laughing with you; not at you, as my Mom would say…)
Someone on another forum pointed out that yesterday is th anniversary of a time when a Governor did call out the state militia in defense of ‘States’ Rights’
Little Rock AR, Sept., 4, 1957, Governor OrvalFaubus calls out the State Guard to prevent nine African American Students from entering the all-white Little Rock Central High School…which he defended on the ground that he was only fighting to keep the Federal Government from interfereing in Arkansas’ state affairs
ET, Simonthesandpiper - accused me of belonging to the rightie-fringe. I’m often opposed to Righties and often for different reasons than most conservative Republican-detractors…
Now, to more important matters: Bcs - Yes, I do. I’m not an angry person, politics should be a window for agreement and building bridges and understanding (I could write for Libs) And see how Bennett fades out his picture in the background - that seems like a cg-technique…I could be wrong. I just noticed Ken Catalino’s cartoon seems cg-enhanced too.
bennett uses an economy of line which allows form to take the lead, unlike some toons which let line take the lead- i’m thinking oliphant, luckovich, many others. bennett also uses atmospheric perspective in this one, giving the illusion of space. Use of shadows - logical shadows rather than arbitrary shadows (especially effective editorially) - can really spin a funky volumetric and tactile quality.
and color is airbrushed rather than watercolored like, for instance, Beattie, who uses daubs of color secondary to the line, or Carlson, who uses color up front as a component of his humor, while Morin, for instance, uses color to match the somber mood of his messages.
kal does one or the other with equal facility it seems.
and rall on the other hand flaunts a disturbing use of color and an aggressive line and style that perfectly fits his editorials.
compare that with ramirez, who has a clean, neat style too, but he’s more of a stay-inside-the-lines-local-color kinda guy.
puppy, you’re probably too young, but what I wrote was a take-off on Sally Fields, who, when accepting her second Oscar, said “You like me, you really like me.” It’s been a source of good-natured (I think) humor ever since.
I’m enjoying the conversation about the artists’ styles. It’s a bit beyond me (straight lines push my abilities to the limit) but I appreciate the discussion which has a completely different tone from the other more combative comments.
Since I appear to be the youngest here, primordially (except for CorFrog and she isn’t here) …I get the dog. Thank you. There is some oleo for your buns on the table, old-timers.
hey believe - let me backtrack on the airbrush - it’s probably computer generated as many toons are. and it’s ok. the compositional and psychological devices he uses are as i said
there are some who employ both drawing by hand and computer-generated “drawing” techniques combined - i’m thinkin thompson, benson (lisa), matson, sherffius, breen, bennett
most familiar to me are the die-hard modernists - whose hand in the work is always visible. still drawing with pen and brush - rall is one. j.d.crowe and luckovich, rj matson, stahler, stantis, streeter, danziger, thompson, varvel, szep, waghorn of course, looks like all the “views” people, tommy toles, briscoe, sargent, horsey
we’re such a twitter-bumper sticker kind of generation it just follows that there are artists whose statements are succinct, abbreviated, spare of detail, yet powerful - right out of photoshop

another example of Bennett’s unique artistic style, it’s sort of like a water color painting or something

Violence in defense of ‘states rights’ Didn’t we settle that back in 1865.?
And isn’t it funny how the rightie-fringe is calling for that when we just happen to have a black president?
Coincidences….coincidences.

Welcome back, ET. School year started for you? Ours starts this week.

English Teacher, you are primordially a pain in the @SS. Don’t include me in the “Right” fringe. I’m on my own fringe, and proud of it!
believecommonsense over 14 years ago
parker, so you think airbrushing is what gives Bennet’s toons this unique look? whatever it is, it’s compelling

puppy, it seems your fringe is unravelling …. perhaps you should chill out or take a long nap or something!
