Sarah Palin: Just think of it, John - here am I, the mayor of lil' ol' Wasilla, and one step away from being vice-president! And only two steps away from being President! Punk: First think of it... then vote!
cartwright, that’s something Oliphant does with all his caricatures…making certain features more pronounced as time goes by. Look at how much the way he draws Bush has changed over the past eight years.
( I first noticed him doing this with Jimmy Carter. )
All cartoonists do this - their caricatures evolve as they learn more about the person in office, to emphasize certain traits. Reagan, for example, started out being drawn old, but by the end people were drawing him as a starry-eyed optimist instead. Clinton went from young to fat. Carter started out with that grin, and wound up with just a large mouth and a lot of worry lines. And we could just about do a pattern analysis on Dubya - from what I can see he has (1) gotten smaller, (2) except for his ears.
Pat is either ignorant or showing that familiar liberal backhanded slap by referring to her as a “Mayor” instead of a “Governor”. NPR has perfected that one as well. I wasn’t a McCain fan but the unfair “Quayle-ization” of Sarah turned me off to the Dems entirely.
It’s the little artistic things Pat does that makes me love his work so much. Notice the difference in McCain between the two frames, particularly the outline of his suit. On the left, it’s very sharp and clean, on the right it’s fuzzy. Such a subtle thing, but it really adds to the effect of him flinching. I love what he says in his cartoons, but the artwork puts it over the top. Good work!

Anyone notice how Oliphant’s portrayal of Palin has changed over the last two months? Almost from cartoon to cartoon–glasses, face, teeth, etc.
