Hobbes, where I come from, that’s called a toboggan.

Do we know what state Calvin and Hobbes are in or where the author grew up? It’s written with so much thought that I wondered if any of it was patterned after his childhood. Did he has a stuffed tiger named Hobbes for example?

Calvin & Hobbes live somewhere in mid-West US - most probably Bill Watterson’s home state of Ohio - Don’t know about the stuffed tiger theory but Calvin & Hobbes - names are based on John Calvin (theologian) and Thomas Hobbes (17th cent philosopher).

The advantage of taking a Tiger with you when you travel to the Yukon, is that he can catch Walruses!

And if you catch a walrus, how do you go about making sandwiches?

A walrus sandwich is easy. Just put it between two slices of bread.

i have a friend whose eaten some moose before. i wonder if she’s had walrus and if they taste the same… i should ask her.

to me it sounds yucky, have a long trip ahead they better save the sandwiches for latter.

All I remeber about the great white north, is never eat raw polar bear liver. It’s so high in vitamin A that it will kill you.

But you’ll have the best eyesight of any corpse in the cemetery.

We call them toboggans here in New England, too.

Dino-1, my feeling has always been he has an 8 yr old son, perhaps named Calvin who needs his sugar intake more carefully monitored. But what ever, it’s great reading, remeniscing and still provides my mate and myself plenty fo new laughs.

They were toboggans in Northern Wisconsin also, but then we always felt like a suburb of Canada

Walrus probably tastes like chicken. It’s easy to make a sandwich. Their tusks make great knives.

We called them toboggons in the Midwest, too. We sure loved ours!

I don’t recall bread being on the supply list, hance no walrus sandwich….maybe if they’d packed Calvin’s mom…

Calvin calls it a toboggan. Not sure why Hobbes called it a sled.

Watterson doesn’t have any children. Nor was he anything like Calvin when he was young. As for Hobbes, he was primarily based off of Watterson’s tabby cat, Sprite. So he said in the 10th Anniversary Edition.

Thanx for the info lose… even though it shoots down my long time theory, it gives me even more respect for his imagination. C&H have been my favorites forever.

Actually, THAT style of sled is a tobbagan. Calvin has used regular “Rosebud”-type sleds too and refered to them as such.
