It still amazes me that we were that close to having someone who attended FOUR colleges, for SIX years to get a B.S. in Journalism, as Vice President of the United States (one heartbeat away from being President).
And instead, we got someone who was the president fo the Harvard Law Review…arguably the smartest student at Harvard…as President. Of course, Roberts, Ginsburg, Scalia, and Breyer are all HLR alumni, but they all served in positions other than president.
Actor George Sanders “wrote” a book.
.
When the publishers asked him what he wanted the author’s dedication to say, he told them to make it “To Craig Rice, without whom it would not have been possible” (or words to that close effect).
.
“H*ll, she wrote it, didn’t she?” he said.
.
(Rice also ghosted - probably -The G-String Murders for Gypsy Rose Lee.)
.
About Craig Rice: http://preview.tinyurl.com/q7s757 (this links to CR’s Wikipedia page; the actual link to there breaks in this coments program)
Obama wrote his own books, which distinguishes him from the vast majority of politicians. Bill Clinton probably wrote his (it could have used some editing), and Nixon certainly contributed to his, but the only previous president with that level of skill was Teddy Roosevelt.
Craig Rice definitely wrote Gypsy Rose Lee’s novel. She (Rice) was a fabulously funny writer, hard to find, but well worth it.
There’s a certain amount of controversy about whether Rice wrote “G-String Murders” or whether she essentially collaborated with Gypsy - the original manuscript appraently suggests that Gypsy may have written it with significant input from Rice - and an article in Armchair Detective from the ’80s argues that while it was ghosted, the actual ghost was someone else (a male someone else).
.
OTOH, i sincerely doubt that Rice had anything to do with the sequel, “Mama Finds a Body”, which i found unreadable.

Had to look up yclept; recognized that from perhaps Sword in the Stone. Yclept = known as, a great name for a ghost writer.

I hear she peruses the National Review now, or at least knows what it is.
