Mike’s Walter Mitty dream reminded me of a late, good friend of mine who was a true lounge lizard. He played piano and entertained in restaurants and hotels all over the world. He had an amazing musical repertoire, especially of show tunes and old standards, and was very popular with folks from my parent’s generation and nostalgia buffs. When I think of piano bars, I think of him.
The ubiquitous drink and tip jar on the piano were as much a part of him as a Gerswhin or Coward tune.
