we all know you are a lover not a fighter Fred!

And it pays, hopefully mostly in sausages, to please the crowd. This the doggy version of that fake wrestling they do on tv, Fred?

Actually I would retrieve quite fast if I would come across dogs in such a manner. I would be anxious, I have to admit.

I remember a recent incident in Grosvenor Park, Chester, which involved much friendlier dogs than these two. Two dogs were walking around in a circle sniffing each other’s butt and a passerby sang “Ring a ring a roses.”

Some years ago, a reader mentioned butt sniffing and I replied that I have never seen Fred sniff a tree or a lampost let alone a butt.

All but one of the onlookers are male. Is watching animal fighting that interesting?

We had some of my wife’s friends over and when the dogs started play fighting, they both freaked. He’s a cat person, she’s into rabbits.

This reminds me of a long-ago comic strip (Tank McNamara, 17 August 1996, which isn’t available on GoComics) involving professional baseball. A scowling coach or manager stormed out to confront the umpire, saying quietly that he didn’t have any real argument with the ump’s most recent decision, but if he threw a public tantrum, it might get his team excited enough to play better.

The umpire said, “No problem,” and made a vigorous “I’m throwing you out of this game” gesture. The two then glared into each other’s faces at nose-to-nose range while chatting about the retirement of Tommy Lasorda, with the implication that Lasorda often did this sort of thing. The ump said, “Tommy’s a lot of fun.”

I understand not trying to break it up for fear of getting bit but why would they be smiling?
