I recognize he is not everyone’s cup of tea, but (“Everyone I know has a big but. Let’s talk about your big but”), I think he was a comic genius, a hilarious human who made so many people laugh with his witty, whimsical humor. Causing so much joy surely earns him a place there. RIP, loner…
Don’t forget that he played The Penguin’s father in one of the early Batman Movies, and he was the voice of the ship in “Flight of the Navigator” as well.
A commenter above indicates that the didn’t find Pee-Wee Herman very funny. Most adults didn’t. But children thought he was hilarious. Kids could identify with his persona of the great big kid nobody really understood who was as bewildered by the adult world in which he lived as most children are. To the kids, Pee Wee got it! He was one of them, a sort of urban Peter Pan who could tweak the nose of maturity and get away with it. He embodied the maxim of an earlier incarnation which said that “Growing up is awfuller than all the awful things that ever were.” Well done, Pee Wee. Enjoy your rest – you earned it.
Paul Reubens I enjoyed. Peewee Herman I did not. Reubans played some serious good roles in a lot of good movies. I could never watch any of his Peewee material.
