Just remembered that I ordered ’n got MY secret decoder ring from the old Captain Midnight radio/tv show.

Breaking into systems started in the ‘60s or so. I remember phone phreaking very well. Legendary phreaker Captain Crunch used a whistle from that cereal to simulate the tones for long distance calls. He later became a legit programmer. Kids didn’t get the opportunity to break into systems until home computers became widely available.
