All this is a bunch of hokum. Facebook and others are just as capable of data-mining and destruction, and I’m pretty sure that their collective management is no more altruistic than that of TikTok. You want to protect Americans for real? Stop getting rid of every gun law on the books, for starters.
The whole idea of painting China as a mortal enemy is part of a bigger problem with our foreign policy. The more we approach other countries with the I’m-right-and-you’ll-do-as-I-say-or-I’m-outta-here attitude, the more China and Russia can spread their influence.
Foreign policy should be like tending a garden. This is what brought down the Soviet Union, but it took decades. You do what’s right, and sometimes nature rewards you and sometimes you get a setback, but you keep trying and adapting until you succeed. Or you could just dump Agent Orange on everything and try to start over….
Recently I ran into an old boss from when I worked for a government contactor. He’s retired, but back then he was a Director and was heavily involved in outsourcing all of our engineering and R&D to Chinese and Indian companies. His reasoning was “increased profits”… I and most of our engineering group got laid off.
When I was talking to Old Boss, he lamented how the company took a nose dive – it couldn’t deliver on contracts because the outsourced help was unreliable and not very competent, and due to the layoffs the company didn’t have the local resources it once enjoyed. The company’s main products got copied by the foreigners, who then underpriced them until our company couldn’t afford to stay in the market. The company stock tanked, and the company got bought out and then broken up / absorbed by one of the foreign companies. Old Boss’s complaint was his stock options ended up worth a whole lot less than he’d expected. He was surprised when I didn’t have any sympathy for him…

As I mentioned in a previous cartoon, President Xi should offer to share all that data with the NSA and CIA. The problem would disappear, unless Microsoft, Google, Meta or Musk really, really want to buy TikTok on the cheap.

Best political cartoon ever. OK. A bit of hyperbole, but it is spot on.

For once I agree with AOC, she thinks the government should not ban TikTok.
This could really open a can of worms where government decides what they want to ban and what not.
