It’s fascinating what imaginary horribles can be created/imagined/exaggerated, with a sense of great urgency … while real threats like climate change, economy stabilization, irrational partisanship, dysfunctional Congress sessions are NOT considered urgent action items.
So naive worrying about TikTok. Is your tracking device on right now? The one that can listen in or see everything around you if the lens is uncovered. Betting the majority of federal and state legislators leave their tracking device on during sensitive sessions, able to listen in on everything being said in earshot. Same thing in corporate boardrooms, phones off? Just because you no longer have the horrible app on your phone means nothing. Welcome to the new vulnerability, get used to it!
Let’s not forget the way that western services such as Google have been heavily restricted in China. This was a combination of the Chinese wanting to censor access to their citizens (the great firewall) and to favor China’s own digital services. In many ways this is a continuation of that battle.
For old-timers, this is reminiscent of Jules Feiffer cartoons on themes like “This is a dance to Spring." Often had a disappointing (to the hopeful dancer) ending.

I am openly wondering if Congress (for all their huffing and puffing) will actually ban TikTok (last I heard, the bill was stalled in Congress). And, if they did, I fail to see how this ban would be enforceable seeing how millions of Americans use the app. Didn’t we have something like Prohibition (outlawing alcohol, beginning with the ratification of the 18th Amendment in 1919 and ending with the ratification of the 21st Amendment in 1933)? If this is truly high noon for TikTok though, YouTube would have the most to gain from a ban. But maybe that’s just my opinion.
