Nope. Not what she meant. Once you have a child, that child is your child until you die. Doesn’t matter how old you both grow, doesn’t matter that said child stands on their own two feet, lives around the world from you, or has no reason to need your care, or (tragically) dies before you. You love them. You care about them. You worry about them. Your heart breaks for them. Your arms are always open for them. And you never forget them & wish you could put your arms around them one more time, if they’ve died before you do. And, quite frankly, that “18 & going to college” is more scary than the first day of daycare, nursery school or kindergarden combined!!!

Being a parent is a binding contract.

A mother’s work is never done, or so I’ve heard.

If the parent does a good job, the child will not want to break all contact at 18. And vice-versa.

When I see young people with an infant – and I have an opportunity – I will say, “24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the rest of your life.”

I can still hear my Gran, in her Scottish brogue saying "the man he’ll work from sun to sun/ but a mother’s work is never done."
