Yep. As my high-school English used to say: Always assume your readers know nothing and don’t assume they will be able to figure things out on their own. You need to spell out everything for them, but the trick is to do it in a way that they don’t realise you’re doing this.
This reminds me of the “Doctor Who” team shipping a double decker London bus to Dubai to film a story. It was damaged in shipment, which was incorporated into the story. But that then meant that the identical bus used in the studio had to then be damaged by hand, in the same way!
