I think Tabby meant “yes” for both arguments of the question.

So on New Year’s Eve, a couple of people (that are known to be a couple) called in on new years eve at the place I work. They gave a lame excuse to the manager they spoke with, and the store manager decided they were likely going to fire them because this wasn’t the first time they called in with some lame excuse. As I’m a shift manager and they were supposed to be there for my shift, the store manager was telling me about this.

Here’s the annoying part. We don’t have some fancy office for conversations like this to happen. Someone overheard the conversation and inform the two no-shows that they HAD been fired. Mind you the store manager was just warning me that she MIGHT fire them and hadn’t actually decided yet.

Now I get it, you’ve been told that you’ve been fired and you are freaking out so you think to get some confirmation on the subject from a manager. But because they tried that and the store manager was still irritated at them for calling in, they lost their jobs with a confirmed yes.

I’m not trying to say that either side was right or wrong in this but come on people… You all got to know some stuff:1) Even if you think your boss is an idiot, a lame excuse to call in is recognized as such. This CAN cost you your job.2) If every time you call in your boy/girlfriend ALSO calls in, management isn’t going to believe even something that sounds like a good excuse.3) By all means non-management can have their Rumor Underground that shares whatever details people can pick up from overheard conversations. But be VERY careful about what you do with the information that you learn from the Rumor Underground. It may be incorrect partially or fully, and if you do the wrong thing with it you might actually force the hand of someone that might have done something different.

For example, if you hear from a work friend that you are going to get fired, perhaps polish up your resume or whatever while you wait to hear if it’s true.

Careful, stealing that line from a Disney Movie can be dangerous!
