MUDD DAY. MUDD DAYMudd Day on December 20th annually recognizes the birthday of Dr. Samuel Mudd, a man whose name was mud after his dealings with one man. After assassinating Lincoln on April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth rode with co-conspirator David Herold to Dr. Samuel Mudd’s home in the early hours of the 15th before crossing into Virginia. Mudd performed surgery on Booth’s fractured leg and allowed both men to stay the night. At some point, Mudd must have learned of the assassination. However, he did not report Booth’s visit to the authorities for another 24 hours. This delay appeared to link him to the crime, as did his various changes of the story under interrogation. On April 26th, authorities arrested Mudd. A military commission found him guilty of aiding and conspiring in a murder and sentenced Mudd to life imprisonment. He escaped the death penalty by a single vote.

I love Oliver’s idea of being bad. Yesterday, I got really lucky to not be badly injured or killed on my bike. I ride out quiet canyon roads but coming back home I often ride in the bike lane through town as our streets are covered with patchwork asphalt and very bumpy. A car turned in front of me at the courthouse and I braked and went off my bike into the right lane. There was plenty of traffic coming thru town but no one in that lane at the moment. People stopped to see if I needed help, I wish one of them had followed that car. I have a big knot on my leg and scrapes on my hands but am okay and was able to ride home. I wear an orange helmet and a bright sweater, I’m not invisible. From now on, I’ll come home on dirt roads through the back side of town.

Oliver, you are such a sweet, good, kitty that kicking one can won’t put you on the naughty list. Chesney, on the other hand….

Just look at those 2 cuties sharing a blanket. Oliver deserves lots and lots of presents from Santa for being the best ever kitten.

Chesney wouldn’t stop at one can. Santa sees you all year, Oliver, and he knows what a sweetheart you are. Don’t be influenced by the brat!

My sister arrived Saturday. Yesterday, Brad came home at 8 AM (he starts at 3:30) with a cold. Why? Because two people were sick last week and refused to stay home. Now I have it. I had an oral surgery appt yesterday. Today we’re getting nails done and I have to pick up a quilt at the shop and I have a podiatrist appt tomorrow. So, I’ll be wearing a mask for a while. We had plans to take her to several new restaurants but those might be off the list.I am not happy.

As if someone as sweet as Oliver could ever be bad. Chesney’s just pulling his leg. On another note, saw three varied thrushes, a woodpecker, a wren, and three chickadees while out walking today. :)
