I’m not arguing with the assertion that border collies are the most intelligent dogs. I do want point out that’s from a very human standpoint. The American Kennel Club description of the breed says, “They are capable of learning a remarkable number of words and commands.” Other descriptions highlight how easy the dogs are to train.
Other breeds of dog are much better at hunting. Or have other skills. But border collies listen to what we say and do it, so we judge them to be the most intelligent.
No definitive ranking of animal intelligence exists but all the lists put a range of animals higher than dogs – some of which might surprise you. Surely everyone knows that chips and dolphins are smarter than dogs, but did you know that elephants, crows and pigs are also more intelligent? And none of those animals give a flip about what we have to say.
Yes they are very smart, as well as very inquisitive, Ours keeps us on our toes. One lesson learned however. Never have a Border Collie and a Schnauzer. The Schnauzer is also a very intelligent breed, but Schnauzers also have some of the most acute hearing in the canine world. Since having her we have learned that Schnauzers used to be paired with German Shepards as guard teams. The Schnauzer for their incredible hearing would alert the German Shepard who in turn would due the more aggressive guarding.
Our Schnauzer can hear a flea cut an SBD fart 3 blocks away, and has to alert the Border Collie so they can both bark.

When my BC’s graduated I dressed them up in cap and gown. I found an old Tau Beta Pi sash and used the sash for bling. Yip yip yip yip yip
I did the same thing for my Huskies when they graduated, and my Canaan Dogs. Yip yip yip yip yip

The pitiful and hilarious tale is too long to tell. Intelligent doesn’t mean sensible.
