Saudi Arabia and Iran are the two bottom dweller nations of the Middle East IMVPO. At least the people of Iran are protesting, so change may come there. The Saudi family has a stranglehold on the people, so I don’t see hope for change there…until the market for their oil is gone.
I’m not playing devil’s advocate here, because the circumstances around Khashoggi’s murder is disgusting and pretty much damming regarding Salmon’s involvement. But, the question is, just how do you try, bring charges in a court against, a foreign head of state and a monarch at that? What court holds jurisdiction? The World Court? I don’t think that body’s charter covers such. If so, why hasn’t Putin been charged, he’s done murder by proxy many times. Just how do you arrest a foreign head of state and bring them to trial? Maybe have a trial in absentia, but that’s about it. I’m open to any serious discussion on how such a trial would take place and where.
This is required in the United States judicial system, otherwise several of the European judicial systems and the individuals represented therein would be chomping at the bit to bring charges against the Bush 43 administration, on committing acts of torture against various combatants during the Abu-Ghraib/Guantanamo days, as a for instance.
It’s sad but necessary to allow MBS to skate on this issue but there is considerable reason we can’t allow our courts to be “gummed up” with civil lawsuits of this nature.
MBS should have been charged in an international court when it happened and it was known there were verified links to the Saudi government. THAT happened during the previous administration in the US. Why no action then, just more arms sales?

Exactly, and not just Khashoggi.

The Biden administration has told a US court that Mohammed bin Salman should be granted sovereign immunity. It’s sickening.
