Here is the secret, Hammie. You don’t remember any of that stuff after you become parents.

Wanda first panel spoke wisdom “With kids, days are long, but the years are short”! They grow up too fast!

I did not understand long division, it was like magic to me when I first encountered it. More surprising was other kids knew this magic. My father spent a long time with me to explain it. The strange thing with my math difficulties was when I took a math test for the service years later, I did better than others. I spent so much time trying to understand it, it stuck with me better.

“Just do my homework for me so I won’t learn anything!” And yet, somehow, he’s an A student.

You don’t learn anything when the answers are given to you, be it math or any other subject or life problem.

I don’t recall my parents ever helping me with home work, just my motivation.

Hammie, homework isn’t about fast, it’s about learning, or at your age, learning how to learn.

There is mathematics and there is arithmetic.

Mathematics is the science and study of quality, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjectures, and establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions.

Arithmetic (a term derived from the Greek word arithmos, “number”) refers generally to the elementary aspects of numbers: arts of measurement, and four main numerical computations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The problem arises in elementary school when math is first introduced to children and it is named as such and all of sudden the children become afraid of it. If math was built on the foundation that was set in the kindergarten level which was about discovery method, the kids in later grades wouldn’t be afraid of it.

Another problem in teaching of elementary math is that sometimes the teachers themselves are afraid of it, and don’t use the right words to explain the rudimentary principles of it.

In my case, I had wonderful teachers in elementary school who knew how to relate math to our every day lives, and I just loved solving those problems.
