… ”because we’re counting on picking up some new seats in 2010 by fanning those same old tried and true flames that have worked so successfully in the past.”
no, not quoting anybody and any agenda. That was my own thought as I watched the hearing, which I was fortunate enough to have the time to watch yesterday. A GOP strategy seemed to be revealed as the hours went on.
Unfortunately for all of us, neither party does anything anymore without a partisan strategy underlying it.
Thomas was properly ripped for his lack of qualifications. Seems to me Powell sailed through, he was well respected by both parties. Rice didn’t go through any landmines the way Sotomayor did – cripes, look at the posturing going on!
No major political party - especially in a 2-party system like the US, which necessitates broad parties - is immune to having idiots and scoundrels among its ranks. Sad, but true.
Robert Byrd certainly was once a rabid racist. However, he is not a hate group, which is what Kitt asked about.
Who knows what’s truly in Byrd’s heart today? What we do know is that he repudiated his past actions, said that he would endless apologize for them, and has earned a 100% rating from the NAACP.
MKitt and cdward, I agree with both your posts. Byrd apologized and acknowledged the errors of his ways without reservation.
My reference is to the number of federal (maybe state too) buildings in his district that now carry his name …. not going to look it up, but I believe it’s about 30!
really unnecessary and arrogant abuse of power i think
BCS, I also agree with you that the naming of buildings in this manner is ridiculous. Personally, naming them after anyone still in office is offensive to me.
church, you might be right, but they keep electing him, and that’s how democracies work. I’m not from that state, so it’s none of my business.

Interesting to note how a competent minority member can scare the pants off the establishment.

MKitt, good post
as far as Byrd, he alone should cause Congress to pass a law outlawing naming federal buildings after congress members
