It’s easier to blame the kid when there’s only one of them. It takes more effort to blame the one still holding the broken stapler after they’ve broken it. Or, maybe not.
One time when I was a kid I was in trouble for something I really didn’t do. When I kept protesting my innocence to my parents, my Dad said, “Well then, consider this a scolding for something you did and we didn’t catch you at.” I had to admit it was fair when you looked at it that way!
