The Democratic party has always been a loose coalition of diverse interests. That’s why there wasn’t a second party for 20 some years after the Federalists. It’s a parliamentary system within itself. Republican party’s self destruction is no great loss as it’s been about idolatry of the rich for most of its existence. The only sad part is the slowness of its suicide, and its killing off of the poor while it’s at it.
The two-party system is the inevitable result of the Electoral College, which I’ll bet Stantis is fond of. You need a majority of the College to win the Presidency, not a plurality. Three strong parties means that Congress picks the President. The Democrats and the Republicans are both coalitions of smaller groups that joined together to get 50%.
There’s also the fact that most 3rd parties are strongly ideological, but most people aren’t. Most people are somewhat flexible. 3rd parties are usually inflexible.
We have reach bipartisan agreement that half the country is evil & must be stopped. 3rd parties just need to convince the half that don’t bother to vote.
The US has had multiple parties. But with so much power being accrued at the federal level vs the state, it doesn’t pay to build up 3rd parties at the local, state or regional level anymore.
