You missed systemic racism (personal & implicit too), misogyny, fear of the other, bogeyman tactics, belief in falsehoods, unwillingness to accept views beyond your own, celebrity worship, Mammon (love of $$$) (that’s in YOUR Bible), etc.
Question…….. Where does an 18 year old get that much money to buy two long guns and 350 rounds in one day? With the way things are now and after Buffalo would you not question this sale, even if is legal?
Varvel got the most recent RW Meme of the Week memo:
Conservatives’ new scapegoat for mass shootings: ‘Culture’
But this time around, many on the right are homing in on what they see as the real culprit: American culture.
In other words, it’s us. Well, not conservatives themselves, of course — the rest of us. We’re the real problem…
So, America stands alone when it comes to gun violence. How do we explain that fact? Since the massacre in Uvalde, Tex., conservatives have found the answer in American godlessness and incivility…
So the problem is not enough religion? But if that were the case, those same peer countries where there’s so much less gun violence would be absolutely drowning in blood.
That’s because the United States stands out among wealthy countries for our religiosity; as the Pew Research Center put it, “When it comes to their prayer habits, Americans are more like people in many poorer, developing nations.” Many of the least religious countries, on the other hand, are also the ones with the lowest rates of homicide.
Nearly unregulated political campaigns + nearly unlimited seasons for political campaigns;
Citizens United decision which permits secret unregulated contributions by corporations, labor unions, other organizations; replacement of Congressional staff-generated legislation with private sector lobbying (primer for how and why this came to be, and mostly negative ramifications/outcomes here): https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2015/08/20/if-congress-keeps-cutting-its-staff-who-is-writing-your-laws-you-wont-like-the-answer/;
too much wealthy elite influence/interference with Congress within both principle parties, but most egregiously — by an enormous margin — with the Repugnant-sorry, misspelling mistake-Republican Party;
35 years of extremist RWNJ talk radio;
30 years of extremist RWNJ cable tv channels;
almost 20 years of extremist political RWNJ internet poison;
only a few years less of plain ol’ everyday human foible, 0 critical thinking belief in absolute BS of all sorts, especially nutjob conspiracies
The RECIPE FOR DISASTER I posted above is incomplete.
It is missing 2 vital ingredients.
First is the capture of the NRA by weapons and ammunition manufacturer’s and the subsequent lobbying power they wield with Congress (part of item two above).
Second, in an almost tie with first, is the eager embrace of the NRA/weapons/ammo sector by the evangelical conservative Christian movement almost instantly with creation of same, and the embrace of both by a late 1970’s GOP with an even smaller national base than their present 2022 national base.

You forgot “religion”, the granddaddy of the hate that undercuts everything wrong with American culture.

I hate it that this cartoonist has such a negative view of his life. There’s a lot of good around the World, too.
Please wake up and smell the flowers, Gary. You’ll ruin your health with all that negative thinking . . .gopher gofer almost 2 years ago
