That’s why I prefer to use the term Hakenkreuz for the Nazi symbol. It’s German, it’s accurate and it avoids any confusion with any ancient symbols that might look superficially similar (The swastika’s arms usually bend in the opposite direction). I STILL don’t put swastikas on anything though, no sense in inviting confusion.
At a thrift store I used to work at, one of our regular customers not only had the Hitler mustache (more accurately called a toothbrush mustache, and the style was pretty popular until Hitler adopted it), he also looked uncannily like Hitler overall. But proving that one shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, he was actually a pretty friendly guy, always smiling and nice to us employees, and as far as I knew, not racist (or fascist) in the slightest.
T-Rex is absolutely right. Both the name and the shape are Indic (Sanskrit) though quite anciently also adopted by Balts (Latvians, Lithuanians, etc.). It’s a late (post-Vedic) adjective derived from svasti- “well-being” (from su-asti-, and in the Rigveda still scanning in three syllables). It’s way too bad that the Nazis ruined it for everybody else.
