We know what Putin’s planning; his internal processes are leaking like a sieve.
This doesn’t help US, but it allows us to warn Europe what’s coming down the Pike.
We don’t need any more sanctions, we just need to keep what’s there in place, and finally, we REALLY need to stop being “children” expecting instant gratification and give what’s in place a chance to WORK – remember what your mommies and daddies said about Rome not being built in a day – well it’s true, and the sanctions WILL work, it just takes time, boys and girls. I know you want results, and you want it NOW, but the world doesn’t always cater to American whims.
Things do not work well when those with no other talent than “taking control by any means” attain a leadership role that they have no competence, experience, or knowledge to offer and can only assign blame to others or take credit for others’ accomplishments.
Russia’s new control tactic is the one Hannah Arendt warned us about 50 years ago. That’s how authoritarian leaders manage to control the populace, the great German political philosopher Hannah Arendt once explained. “If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer,” she said in an interview nearly five decades ago. When that happens, people lose the capacity not only to act but even to think and judge. “And with such a people,” she concluded grimly, “you can then do what you please.”
Flash forward to a new war in Europe and a new diabolical way to confuse the populace of Vladimir Putin’s Russia: a raft of Russian-language videos that bill themselves as fact-checks of falsehoods by Ukrainian propagandists — but are actually fakes themselves. This is next-level disinformation, a mind-bending 21st-century version of what Arendt warned us about.
In the digital age, keeping reality under lock and key isn’t as feasible as in Hannah Arendt’s day. What is possible, though, is sowing endless doubt.
What Putin has done to Russian media/communications (tv/radio/interwebz) in the past three weeks — well, slowly/incrementally/surely for the past two decades — is greatly admired by Herr Trumpenfurher, Rupert Murdoch, Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon, Mike Pompeo, Josh Hawley … well, the list of conservative authoritarians includes most of those who in 2022 identify as American GOP. Especially the Christian Dominion cadre.
“Need to do that here, we’d all be better off,” each and every totalitarian-craving f__k thinks to themselves.
It has to be noted that Putin, viewing the success of tRump’s THE ELECTION WAS STOLEN! canard with the US public despite a still relatively free American press trying at least somewhat to counter that big fake news lie, has employed direct disinformation about Ukraine bio-weapons/nazism/they started it! bs to great effect.
The Russian public believes that absolute falsehood with the same fervor 80% of Republicans believe tRump’s BIG LIE about the 2020 election, and no amount of evidence — or lack thereof — can budge them. Motivated reasoning is almost impossible to overcome.
