larry niven and anne mccaffery both had stories where alien worlds were chosen because they were first explored while in good phases but after they started colonizing there the bad parts showed up.
in niven stories one world was flat and had hurricane force storms blow over whole planet. on another robots found and reported it habitable, but only on top of mountain rage, for area about size of california. third was planet with banded ec systems, near equator was atmosphere too heavy to support life, to north and south their were thin bands habitable but north and south pole areas were in vacuum.

and remember one story where aliens from a mild tropical world and were cold blooded, and were not ready for snow, blizzards, tornadoes and hurricanes, or wildlife like bees wasps or army ants, or high altitude and were used to islands and not large land masses

I’m kinda with the aliens on this one.
