    I would’ve gone with a 1-99 chance.

Pretty close to zero chance you’re going in the right direction if your boxcar is sitting still.

unless the direction he’s traveling isn’t perpendicular to his destination-—then both directions would be wrong

That’s pretty much the same way I navigate my way back to my car in a parking lot.

A steaming cup of joe in an empty bean can would’ve really sold this one…

Since there are four directions Poncho could go, his odds are reduced to 25/75 that he’s going the “right way”.

My dogs, when scared, have always tried to head off in exactly the correct direction, even when miles and miles from home, even when inside a building. It’s pretty amazing! I myself get lost very easily. Way too easily. When I was first doing dog therapy in a hospital and got confused, I would go to the basement and let my dog lead me. She would head for the cafeteria, no matter how far we were from it. Then, I would know where I was. Love that beagle nose!

Actually, the odds are more like 25% assuming just N, E, S and W

I know that some dogs (as mentioned above, and others) are very good at finding their way home, or to wherever they and their owner should be going. But the ads and Facebook and many other places are filled with “lost dog” notices (which break my heart). As someone who is absolutely hopeless with directions and constantly in danger of getting lost, I can sympathize with Poncho. But I can’t say even in my most misguided moments, I left shelter and food without any idea where I was, like Poncho did, lol!
