I have thought about that. Perhaps at “turn over time”, we’ll just upgrade the current “worst” variant’s name (as Delta still was last week) to “SARS-CoV-3” and start over with variant Alpha.
I was interested to note that they deliberately skipped nu and xi: Nu is too easy to confuse with “new” in English; and “Xi” is a very common last name (as anglicized), so not appropriate to name a deadly variant with it.
