Of course, Nate could try and apply himself to his studies, for a change, and become eligible for some scholarships; LOTS of those are out there for the asking- but the ‘fees’ take the form of high enough marks to make the student worth the risk of the funding. I think he’d be Much better off if his parents (And grandparents) started pushing the idea of self-discipline and personal responsibility; putting a bit of ‘I am the Master of my Fate, and the Captain of my Soul’ into his mindset. Just a thought…
Many have no business going to College for worthless degrees that will never end up with good paying jobs to pay off those loans, and can’t afford it in the first place. They should be looking into Trade schools that cost a whole lot less, and in some cases are basically free with a guaranteed good paying job offer upon graduation.
That is why my Dad joined the AAF (the early version of the Air Force) in 1944— the GI Bill was the only way he could pay for his Bachelor’s degree. He also dug ditches, buried sewer pipes, installed telephone poles, did farm work, and washed dishes to earn money for his Master’s degree.
