    Today is:

International Artist Day. Our friend Chesney is a scam artist. I wonder if that counts?

    National Greasy Foods Day

Chucky The Notorious Killer Doll Day

Sourest Day. I had to know if this was bout sour candy or about lemons or what. So I looked it up and found this:

“Sourest Day follows on the heels of Sweetest Day. This sourest day of the year is observed annually on October 25th. If life is giving you lemons or you feel like a grumpy Gus, this day is for you. Take your glass-half-full attitude and spread the joy er gloom. Smiles be banished! Replace them all with pouts and terrible frowns. Wallow in your petulant mood. Take sulking to new lows. Frown like a clown catching the midnight train outta town. Develop a harrumph worth trademarking. Scowl so foul that people will catch a whiff of it before they even see you. When walking by a skein of yarn, it should leap onto your brow already knitted. That’s just how sour you need to be on this day.”

So, here it is, October 25 and I have still not had frost here. Some years we get frost by late September. And almost always by early October. But I haven’t had it here yet. There might have been frost out in the country by now, though. Maybe even in my garden at my brother’s place. I haven’t had a chance to ask Mark about that. If it isn’t raining, I want to go to my garden this afternoon to dig my potatoes. Then I’ll see if he has had frost. But my morning glories are still thriving in my back yard and they are not at all frost tolerant. So are the impatiens (but I’ve been covering those on cold nights). No frost happening tonight, either. I love it!

For the past several years, I’ve been growing a few extra vegetables in my garden and taking the extra produce to sell in our break room at work. I donate all the money I raise to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) for children’s hospitals. I don’t remember what year I started doing that. But I started working at Walmart in 2005 and I started doing this soon after that – maybe around 2007. Back then, all the area Walmarts were in stiff competition to see which store could raise the most money for CMN. There was no prize aside from bragging rights, but we did all sorts of things to raise money for CMN. I wanted to help, but I was barely scraping by on my paychecks back then. Sometimes I even had to dip into savings to meet some of my bills. I even had to apply for fuel assistance one winter to help heat my house. So how could I give money to CMN?

Then it came to me. I was already planting a garden. I figured that by just planting a few extra seeds (well, maybe it was a lot of extra seeds), I could grow so many green beans and tomatoes and things that I could sell them and raise a decent amount of money. I never really kept track how much I raised those first years, but so many associates loved my produce, I started planting more and more so in recent years, I was making at least $100 a year for CMN. Last year was the first year I actually kept close track and I raised $132. Quite possibly my best year. This year I beat it. I raised $140 this year!

The Walmart stores no longer compete to see which store can raise the most money. I miss that. I especially loved beating the Super Centers because ours is not a large store. But I’m pleased that I was able to beat last year and have already set a goal to do even better next year.

    ALPHA CAT UPDATE

As some of you know, Alpha is very much his own person. He has strong ideas about how people should behave and even stronger ideas about how people and cats should interact.

A long time ago we took him to the vet. The vet was old school, didn’t believe in (or offer) aromatherapy or psychiatric analysis for you furry friend, you told him what you wanted or whet the problem was and he’d see to it that it was done thoroughly and professionally (he was also a large animal vet.)

The vet had a new trainee vet with him on that occasion. The boss knew Alpha and they got on just fine together. They understood and liked each other. The trainee was very new.

He told the trainee “Do NOT stick your hand in grab him by the scruff of the neck when taking him out of the carrier!” (He himself always opened the carrier door and Alpha was happy to stroll out himself and greet his friend.)

The trainee made the mistake of ignoring the advice.

Alpha was grabbed by his neck and immediately demonstrated to the junior vet the error in her reasoning. (You NEVER grab Alpha by the scruff -it’s both undignified for him and he always construes it as an insult/threat of the worst kind.)

Later, returning Alpha to my wife, the senior vet made the comment – “She ignored what I said” – with a grin on his face. It seems the trainee needed to have the blood cleaned off her hands and antiseptic and dressings applied after Alpha demonstrated his displeasure at being treated like a mere animal

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and Alpha went in for routine maintenance up here at a new vet’s.

My wife said to the staff and lady vet “Do NOT try to grab him by the scruff of the neck when getting him out of his carrier”.

The score is now Alpha: 2, Veterinarians: 0.

Treat a gentleman like a gentleman and there will never be any trouble. Do otherwise and…

I’d gladly help Ms or Mstr Nutkin with that tariff but I only have @26 frozen shrimp in the freezer. And just WHO put a warehoused cat in charge of licensing?

That seems a bit pricey. How many shrimp for just a hamster licence? On another note saw a wren, a sparrow, twenty geese flying in a flock, two golden crowned kinglets, and a wooly bear caterpillar while out walking today.
