“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” Mark Twain

There was an article in the Smithsonian magazine about Mark Twain’s trip to Italy. He was touring a museum and remarked about how impressed he was with the “Negro” docent. Something along the lines of “The man was well-dressed, and spoke beautifully. He was much more knowledgeable than the others, and I was very impressed.” Twain stated that this event completely changed his attitude toward members of the Negro race.

Throughout the entire article, the Smith referred to the docent as an African-American. He WASN’T an African-American! If anything, he was an African-Italian – or just plain Black.
