In some states the substitutes have to have qualifications and teaching credentials the same as a regular classroom teacher in case they have to take over for the long term (1 month or more). They don’t get paid as much as a regular classroom teacher, but the experience does count the same on the pay matrix in some states. In other states the substitute can get by with a BA/BS in some subjects.
I worked for over a year as a substitute teacher while trying to get a permanent position. Yes, pretty much a glorified babysitter, but worse was that the call would come around 6:30am to see if I was available that morning. So then I was rushing to get ready and get to the school no matter how bad the weather. I got called a lot, but never on a schedule, so I could never make plans for the day “in case” I got a call.

Just push the desks in the middle and have them run around them.

“…a glorified babysitter.”
Not the substitutes I had. They kept us busy with actual learning.
