Apparently, some million or so people now live on islands such as this one. And not even ONE of those islands is suitable for putting up any building higher than 2 stories or so, if that. There is nothing down there but sand and sea water. I suppose you could build a concrete boat and “float” it on the sand. But it would be really interesting dealing with utilities in that case.
As Joe has illustrated, any one, two, or even three of the items of concern may not have caused the building failure by themselves, but taken together, over time, they are a disaster in the making.
Several experts appearing on various news programs have noted that different inspections may have focused on different areas and aspects of the building, without being aware of the findings of previous inspections. Now the forensic team(s) will be reviewing all the available information in order to make a determination as to what happened. In turn, that will help guide the future design, construction, and maintenance of buildings in similar circumstances.

The way to solve this is to follow Trump’s lead and remove more regulations.

You would think that this tragedy might serve as an object lesson in the importance of infrastructure maintenance.
