If you have ever had a “small” dog who loves you and crawls all over you the butt was in your face, not the same but very close. AAlso cats too but I think they do it on purpose, because they are cats.
Aside from the spelling, dogs don’t sniff each others’ butt as a greeting. They do it because the sniffed had something interesting for dinner. – “what are they feeding you? That musta been good.”
