What I don’t understand is when a letter is silent why put it in the word?
Neither. It’s a consonant blend.
“Sent,” “cent,” and “scent,” the two you pronounce the same determines which letter is silent (if you pronounce two the same way). I pronounce “sent” and “scent” the same way so it is the “c” that’s silent, but that could be my regional dialect.
