I imagine Richard Nixon thought his efforts to open China up to the international community of trade and diplomacy would provide a tame pet to the Western managed dog park. How that dragon pup has grown. And it started with so-called ping-pong diplomacy. Rather, call it short-sighted “ding-dong” diplomacy.
20 years ago I thought China would be the dominant world nation by 2040. They’re still on that path. They’re becoming everything the U.S. feared that Russia would be during the cold war but never came close to achieving.
Number one threat to America…..why then are they allowing China, Russia, and other foreign countries to buy so much land, housings, businesses in America? Duh! GREED!
It has become “the rule” on the Right to refer to mainland China as “Communist China” – this is accurate ONLY if Taiwan is referred to as “Nationalist China”.
Before Nixon’s trip to China and before Nixon sold out Taiwan, those terms were how we delineated the difference between the two. “Tricky” Dick agreed to recognize mainland China, agreed to push for the removal of Nationalist China from the United Nations and the seating of Mainland (or Communist) China at the U.N., instead.
That’s right, folks; the present “mess” with China originated with “Tricky” Dick and the republicans!
Once upon a time Taiwan/Nationalist China was Ilha Formosa (beautiful island), as early Portuguese explorers called it. That name was used well into the late 50s.
Don’t know how successful the Chinese expect to be without their military, economy, and technology… maybe like any other lighter-than-air balloon that is released into the atmosphere, that dragon balloon will eventually pop and the guy riding it will plunge to his demise…
Not sure I quite understand this. So, China, represented by its dragon, is currently tethered or held down, by its military, its economy, and its technology, and Xi (?) is trying to jettison these and free the dragon from them?
