“Wait a minute… What’s it doing? It isn’t on the ground, it isn’t in a tree… It’s in the air! Look at that, it’s caught a breeze now! It’s past the trees now, with room to spare! Oh, what a beautiful sight! And I’m not such a clumsy guy if I really try; I can really fly a kite!”
Props to anyone who recognized the reference. (Psst, it’s a song!)
What’s with all the barking? Red’s right there, and Rover normally communicates silently. I guess Brian didn’t want to give things away with a thought balloon, and if Rover just stood there, readers might not realize it was his idea.

Wish I had thought of that when I was little and trying (unsuccessfully) to fly my kites. Good work, Red!

For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight on trampoline
The Hendersons will all be there
Late of Pablo Fanques Fair, what a scene
Over men and horses, hoops and garters
Lastly through a hogshead of real fire
In this way Mr. K. will challenge the world
