    In his treatise “Cracking Jokes” (Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young @$#!), Art Spiegelman discusses how all humour is at some level a highly refined form of cruelty and goes on to examine it in scrutinous depth.

    He might well be on to something…
