My parent’s house was on a hill, with a major through street at the bottom. One day, my father bought us a skateboard and told us to knock ourselves out.

Today’s lesson: Don’t skateboard on surfaces that can suddenly tilt.

Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall… And you’ll be riding a skateboard when it happens.

Not a skateboard story but there was this street that dead ended near our house. It had a mild slope downward but you could get up a pretty good head of steam on the way down. I put on my trusty skates (the metal kind that you clamped to your shoes with a skate key) and took off down the street. About three quarters down I realized that I didn’t know how to stop other than falling down and I was going way too fast so that was definitely going to leave a mark. The street ended in about 20 feet of gravel, then 20 feet of grass (weeds) and then trees. It was then that I learned that trees are hard, weeds don’t taste all that good and it takes awhile to pick out all the grit from cuts and abrasions.

Be prepared. For pain and blood.
