Between the job he has and 4 kids at home, when would he have time to read?

If it’s rude to ask someone if they read the Hobbit, the Ring trilogy or Dune, then kiss my behind and call me rude because I have done it before and will ask again. The world is getting ridiculous with pettiness.

I disagree with the “rudeness” aspect presented. Asking if someone has experienced a given entertainment is not the problem unless the listener feels “attacked” for not having had that experience. For instance, it’s not rude if I ask if you heard Sam Cookes music, saw “Cats”, or “Married with Children”. If your teacher asks, “Did you read Hiawatha by Longfellow?” you might feel a little trouble coming on if it was your homework assignment. All that said, may I ask, "Have you read Clover by Nicole Kilpatrick? It’s a new young adult fantasy tale from a spanking new author. In this case, it’s a rhetorical question, the purpose of which is to increase awareness. I hope I’m not being rude!!

My mother thinks it’s rude when I don’t agree with her.

Their son only has a mind for his wife, Marcy. Is that so bad?

The only reason most people bother to talk to other people is to prove their superiority intellectually, ethically, logically, politically, spiritually, etc. Which is inherently self-oriented and rude. So pretty much all conversation is rude. If we eliminate conversational topics because they involve someone being rude by trying to be dominant in some way…there would be no conversations any longer.

Mom is talking about a serious/boring book, dad is talking about a comic. Joe should fake being a fan of a manga like Taniguchi, that way he gets both worlds. Drawings and beautiful stories.

if you want someone to read a book, tell them how much you enjoyed the book yourself, don’t JUDGE them for not having already read it when you mentioned it. That would have the opposite effect, “the literature this person reads has turned them into a judgemental asshole who thinks their opinions are objective fact, I’m going to avoid reading those books lest I also become an asshole.”
