Ray is only the mean one because the birds live to tell the tale.

Some birds (pigeons, chickens…) are really stupid. Some birds (crows and other corvids, parrots…) are really smart. Domestic turkeys are literally too stupid to come in out of the rain. They make pigeons look like geniuses. Scratch could try that trick on pigeons, on some of the dimmer songbirds, and on chickens or on domestic turkeys. If he pulled it in jays it wouldn’t work; they’d come in and get out too quickly. If he tried it on ravens, he’d be sorry, as they’d go and get reinforcements and mob him. Ravens and jays and other corvids will mob owls and eagles and hawks and, sometimes, cats; jays are too small to go for cats, but ravens are big enough and smart enough to make cats decide that going elsewhere is a good idea. Do not annoy ravens, they have very good memories, they can count, and they can let other ravens (and crows) know about a potential problem and will assemble a large force to deter that problem.

You got that right about the raven’s, Out quail hunting one morning and saw this dipsh#t shoot down a raven. In less than 3 minutes he was mobbed by at least 33 to 40 raven’s. Awesome and scary sight.

I suppose every strip needs a villain, but of the various predators we see in the strip – the wolves, the sharks, the occasional killer whale – it is an interesting choice that Scratch is the one that is not sympathetic. Perhaps Chip just really doesn’t like his own (or his SOs) cat?
