$16 trillion in costs for Covid, more than 15 million cases and 283,835 deaths thanks to “Don’t wear a mask, it’ll go away soon and I’m firing any experts who contradict my fever dreams.”
Sure, leave it open. There’s always room in the back alleys behind the hospitals for more patients, and the trucking industry could use the boost, delivering refrigerated freight cars as portable morgues.
The problem, as I see it, in California, as well as the rest of the nation, is freedom. We have great freedom in the US. We celebrate our freedom. We demand our freedom. We fight for our freedom. And when we are asked to forgo even a little part of that freedom, we get upset. Even if the practice of our freedom might cost lives, we still fight for it; even if the fight for our freedom means depriving another of their freedom by kidnapping or further spreading the Covid virus that can very easily kill even more.
We are also very capitalist. Money talks, greed is good. We don’t want to curtail the modern robber barons, we want to become them. So if our restaurants and bars just happen to be major Covid spreaders, then that’s just too damn bad cause I need my money. Why we’ve even had Repub leaders suggest that the aged ought to just go ahead and die to protect the economy!
But, we’re quite willing to cough up big bucks for a ticket to watch our favorite team beat the socks off the other guys. What we need now is to step up to the plate, tow the line, and do everything, that’s right, everything necessary to defeat Covid 19. Why, you ask? Because we are all part of a great team, Team USA, and our team is taking a beating at the hands of the Covid team. To win, we might need to forgo some freedom and cough up some money to see that our team, Team USA, crosses the finish line first. And if you need any more cliches’ then lets win this fight for all those, over 270,000, who have paid the maximum price with Covid.
With a proper federal response conducted at the proper time, this could all have been unnecessary.
But here we are: the economy will never, never recover if the virus is not under control. And the longer it takes to get under control, the longer it will take for the economy to recover.
The right answer is to keep those business owners solvent, keep the workers able to keep their homes, and allow landlords to get paid. Since tens of millions believe that there is no risk to themselves or others (or that risk to themselves and others are just fine with them), the only way to do this is with a relief package.
Pay people to stay home. That’s what it comes down to. But if we all stay home, anti-maskers will only infect themselves and their loved ones, and will leave us patriotic Americans less vulnerable.
Yes, it’s unfair for Big Box to be open but the boutique peanut shop cannot. When the boutique peanut shop can supply food, medications, car and home repair parts, I’ll be more than happy to go there for my supplies. Until then, I am happier to share my tax money with Americans in need than to send billions to our “friends” in the Middle East, or invent an entire “Space Force”, when a separate wing (no pun intended) of the Air Force would have been far cheaper and easier to manage, or build miles of millions-per-mile wall that can be cut with a reciprocating saw.
Without a relief package, yes, very bad things will happen. This is common sense, is it not?

As usual, Ramirez bends over backwards to disparage a Democrat, even in the face of all the evidence. But you’ve got to admit: that’s a wonderfully depicted bear, and a weird sort of compliment to California.

But sure, let’s go after the governor of a single state instead of the guy who f_cked everyone in the country over with his nonexistent pandemic plan.

Ah, Mr. Ramirez. What constructive suggestions do you offer? Keep in mind, letting people die is not an option.

I am sure that Mr. Ramirez would be happy to volunteer at the local hospital so the staff can have a break at Xmas!

Looks like Ramirez wants customers to endanger themselves by willfully entering the jaws of danger, just for the benefit of somebody else’s profits…

The covid spreading Trump admin stole all the PPP money and gave it to their rich friends, they don’t care about small American business at all.
