We also don’t like the NSA spying or the torture at all. The defining virtue of America, as I understand it, is not that we are all that great now (we aren’t), but that we’re working in order to make it better, always. A more perfect union. Also, cable TV news in general is a rather mediocre source of information. Scientific papers, newspapers, and news services like Reuters and AP are somewhat better.

I think appalled is a better word than shocked. So few things shock anymore. But we are inexplicably appalled.

I think it was around 1969 that I realized iconoclasm was too often mistaken as being intellectual.

When you pull back the covers.. “Americanism” is a bit of a sham isn’t it? Propaganda hides many sins that, eventually.. history shines a light on.

Now this is more like the old Rall: cutting, concise and illuminating. You really can’t argue with any of frames, except for the last one. I don’t know anyone who is shocked. That Trump is working to establish a dictatorship has been an issue since the start of his administration. Even most of Trump’s supports knew is as they want it too.

3rd panel: I guess that means 60% of Americans oppose socialism.

Well, Biden appears to be going to let TrumpCo off the hook for its crimes. Just as so many of us thought he would. Anyone still want to make book that he’ll do anything both progressive and meaningful?

There was NO “legalized torture” in the U.S. under Bush2. Cheney and Rumsfeld illegally OK’d waterboarding, which the U.S. had signed agreements outlawing. The CIA and U.S military followed the law and rejected Cheney and Rumsfeld’s directive.

Snowden alleges such activities but still has provided no proof of any.

FOX ‘news’ flat out lies, but claim they are an entertainment source, not a news source. NEWSMAXX lies more than FOX, and Rall’s employers, Sputnik International, a news website platform established by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya, has their own obvious agenda. The “Main Stream Media” make mistakes, no one and none are perfect. But they are more trustworthy than the rest, and are easily fact-checked and welcome that fact checking.

Our First Amendment provides for ‘Freedom of the Press’. There was ‘fake news’ from our start, evidenced by the news reports printed during the presidential election between Adams and Jefferson. This was not new, nor foreign to our Founders. Their charge to all who followed, to all of us today, is to make the effort, separate the fly poop from the pepper, study, look for and find the truth. This Nation is established to be SELF GOVERNMENT. That means WE, the PEOPLE are responsible to maintain and keep this government. Not the politicians. Not the media. Not the pundits nor the political cartoonists. WE, the PEOPLE.

Odd how “Stay Inside” is okay for martial law under a coup, but not for slowing the spread of COVID-19…

While I am NOT happy about the government surreptitiously spying on its own citizens, it is funny to me how we don’t seem to mind the fact that Apple, Facebook, Google, every cell phone company and even this site gather petabytes of data on us every day. Google probably knows more about me than the US Government. Just remember, we are not the consumer, we are the product to these companies.

For 10 years, I taught in the public schools. In my history and civics classes, Fridays were “current events day,” which were devoted to major topics. One thing I tried to emphasize strongly was to know their news sources. I told them that the same event would be reported differently, depending on if the source had a liberal or a conservative slant. If they didn’t learn anything else in my classes, I hope they remembered that. Of course the ideal would be a report that includes the viewpoints of both sides, but unfortunately, that has become fairly rare.

Panel #3 says that the media are “heavily censored”. How often does Mr. Rall get censored?

I am not shocked. Trump said he was going to do this for several years…repeatedly. I have no idea why some people didn’t believe him. I always thought it was one of the few true things he said.
