To me, this feels like losing an old and treasured friend. I’ve been an avid Jeopardy fan since childhood, when Art Fleming hosted the daytime version, long before it went into syndication. But Alex Trebek made it everybody’s favorite “brainiac” game in which knowledge and quick recall (and good reflexes on that signaling button) mattered more than contestant silliness or histrionics. Alex let the contestants be the stars, either in their performance or their wit and quips. Thank you, Mr. Trebek. Well done.
Thanks for honoring Alex, Mr. Breen. I’ve watched Jeopardy! forever, and I wanted Alex to last forever, too. I just hope they can find a host who has most of the qualities that Alex brought to the game. If they choose to, as they say in Hollywood, “go in another direction” and hire some silly host who has little respect for the game itself, they’ll lose me as a viewer.
Alex Trebek and Jeopardy made being smart and knowledgeable fun. Even when you could not come up with the answers you still ended up winning, by learning a little bit more.
Alex is the third very notable person we have lost to pancreatic cancer this year, along with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Rep. John Lewis. If you are interested, you can donate in Alex’s name to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. During the 2019 Jeopardy Tournament of Champions I played along, and then made a donation based on the number of answers I got right. Because of the way the foundation is set up, 100 % of every donation goes directly to scientific and clinical research. They are highly rated by charity watchdog groups.
Working nights didn’t allow me to watch “Jeopardy” so it was 1995 before I could. It’s required watching every week night now. Some nights I do very well, some nights I don’t. Alex will be difficult to replace but I hope the games will go on.

I’ve always wanted to ask Alex one question: was he unhappy he wasn’t in Weird Al’s video, “I Lost On Jeopardy?”

No, it should be; Q: Who is Alex Trebek. The whole point of Jeopardy was that you come up with a question for the answer.
