I know that the US armed forces are already planning how to cope with rising sea levels. Don’t know but assume that most of the other armed services are doing the same. My assumption is that folks will be moving to the high ground if possible. Since the US has most of the high ground in the Americas, you can bet that we’ll be at least TEMPTED to be more not less racist, though the targets will likely be the folks from the shoreline cities and the Caribbean areas.

Be sure to vote for your third party candidate, Ted.

    That’ll fix things, by golly.

C’mon Rall, you should be rejoicing at all those rich folks in Palm Beach are going to be among the first to see their mansions crumble. All the rich folk have tried to claim the beaches everywhere in this country for their own private use, and invested much into land that will crumble away. I think some old book warned about building on sand.

All those events will still happen. The only difference is that the pollution, injustices, wars, etc. will happen on a retail basis instead of a wholesale basis.

Climate change will happen with or without mans help. Did before we came into the picture and will long after we are gone. Civilizations came and went in the past.. and the current one will do the same. Over population will bring us to our knees long before the effects of climate change does it.

I fear that the human race is a failed experiment. I hope I’m wrong. Too many people still don’t understand the seriousness of climate change. This virus has been bad, but we will get it under control. The effects of climate change are not going to be controlled by public health measures or a vaccine. Large areas which are now inhabitable will become too hot. The people who live in those places will try to move, and they will not be welcomed. Large parts of the coastlines will be underwater, and again, the people who live there will try to move. Storms will be more destructive. It will be harder to grow crops. Governments will not be able to deal with the problem, and some will became more authoritarian. It’s not a pretty picture, but I don’t see where I’ve gone wrong. Please, someone convince me that I’m exaggerating the problem.

I have a cousin that once owned beach property one block back from the actual beach. They used to joke that in ten years or so, they’d have beach front property. Each year you can see how close the atlantic is getting to the foundations of the current beach front property construction. Remember Waterworld the movie. It’s coming.

    In re: Panel 3:

We hear every day that the presidential election will be a referendum on democracy in the United States. But it will also be a referendum on regulating capitalism. It is long overdue.

Just as our politics have migrated away from democracy toward authoritarianism, our economy has forsaken capitalism in favor of monopoly.

Monopoly is not the same as capitalism. When managed properly, capitalism is inherently democratic, enabling opportunity for and participation by the many. But capitalism is not a natural state. It requires rules and oversight, set and enforced by government so that anyone can participate.

Joe Biden has stated that if he wins the presidency, his top priority will be to restore democracy. But the battle to restore voting rights, fix redistricting and fight against foreign interference in our elections will not succeed unless a Biden administration also addresses concentrated economic power. Reviving the Sherman, Clayton and FTC acts is an essential first step; the next president must use the bully pulpit to push corporate leaders to prioritize the needs of employees, communities, suppliers and customers, as well as shareholders. If the next administration wants to address climate change, health care, gun violence and racism, it will have to regulate Internet platforms. Political and economic reform may be impossible so long as Internet platforms are free to amplify hate speech, disinformation and conspiracy theories without penalty.

There is hope. Americans are engaged. People are standing in line for hours to cast a vote. If elected, Biden will have a mandate to restore democracy and capitalism. It will be the work of a generation

In regard to citing “Waterworld” and the images in Rall’s cartoon. No, even if the Greenland and Antarctic ice were to all melt, the depth of the water would be less than 300 feet.

That’s a lot of course, and would ultimately lead to the displacement of billions of humans from their present locations.

Almost all of Florida would be underwater.

The Central Valley of California would be mostly underwater.

    Yuma Arizona — underwater.

    Toronto — underwater

    Vicksburg — underwater

    Albany NY — underwater

    and so on.

    London, Rome, Paris, — underwater.

While tall buildings might last for a little while, ultimately they will fall to the power of water, relentlessly pounding on their bases. But one should expect that we will demolish them first, to recover vital metals.

That will lead to refugees being employed in the dangerous work of demolition and scrap collection. All in a much warmer world.

Oh, and sea level rise of 3mm a year. Well, earlier last century it was about 1 mm per year. It will not remain 3 mm per year. The rate is accelerating and will continue to accelerate. And the effects of even a one foot rise extend laterally (shoreward) by a very large factor on shallow slopes.

Maybe if people bothered to look at the effects on the naval yards in Virginia of sea level rise, they might get a better understanding that scoffing at a foot of sea level rise is just plain stupid.

I actually don’t disagree with this strip. But as per usual Ted neglects to name one person who has in the last four years been doing nothing refuting climate change as a hoax. For someone who claims not to be a Trumptard, Rall goes very easy on the Mango Mussolini.
