I would’ve thought Mike to be a beagle like Snoopy (of course Ginger Meggs is older than Peanuts by at least three decades).
The “growing” part refers to the horizontal dimension, particularly around the waist.
Moxie is a canardly. You can hardly tell what breed she is.

Mike is what we’d call a garbage can dog. Their heritage is usually unusually rich in diversity. They’re also very sweet.
