Most went to Boston to laugh at the underdog. Ha! Ha! De Sox is #1. You notice Eno (in the yellow polka dot boxers) is going to pitch for the Tigers today. Hey Yankees, you can’t hide on the West Coast forever. The next mini series (you lost the first two) is at Fenway, right next to the Comic Convention.

@gmartin997 – “Cul de Sac” cartoonist Richard Thompson is up for a Reuben. I hope he wins, better than that no-talent hack Stephen Pastis (prolly the ballcap guy in the fourth panel holding a beer).

I think I’m detecting a theme here. Do cartoonists drink a bit?

Anyone notice how many of them got out of the tiny taxi, and one more (at least) still to come? A beautifully understated reference to a clown car. :]

A cartoonist has to be able to laugh at himself (no ladies present, I see), because few enough other people will! The rest will be divining political content out of their gags whether it’s in there or not. Am I right, Wiley?

So the picture is that cartoonists are a bunch of baboons or drunkards.

Cartoonists don’t get enough respect. If it wasn’t for them, how would I get my laughs? Especially when I read through posts on gomics.com?

    “Cartoonists don’t get enough respect.”

Cartoonists probably get just about as much respect as they want. The self-deprecating image of cartoonists as immature, ink-stained wastrels has been lovingly crafted over generations (when cartoonists are asked to do self-portraits, how often do they make them flattering?).

As far as the drinking goes, remember that newspaper cartoonists originally worked side-by-side with reporters, in the newsroom. Again, their self-image was minted back in the Golden Age of Newspapers, when the “hard-drinking newspaperman” was expected type.

A joke that Walt Kelly used (more than once) in “Pogo” (and Kelly ALWAYS retained his connection with the newsroom) was “A cartoonist asks a reporter ‘Is a cartoonist a newspaperman?’, and the reporter answers ‘Is a barnacle a ship?’”

The guy with the ball cap and beer is the guy who writes "Pearls Before Swine…Stephan Pastis. He’s drawn himself into the strip too often; he’s readily identifiable. Jim Davis is the guy next to him – with the two-beer-can cap…

Whilst I always enjoy Mr Wiley’s penmanship & irony, this cartoon totally took me by surprise & had me burst out laughing with its self-deprecating take on his profession. Also, the random drunkenness & the inclusion of clown-like characters & the Ape/Gorilla reminded me of Mad Magazine which I used to love. Well done Mr Wiley .. love your work : )
