After watching so many Mexican movies with my abuelos, I would say that’s a pretty accurate record of the wooing process.

What couldn’t you do with almost three hours of a mariachi’s services?

There is an old story about a kindly man who noticed a young fellow serenading a young woman under her balcony every evening. He made some inquiries and discovered they might make a suitable match. He told the young man he should ask the family for the young woman’s hand. The serenader thought for moment before asking, “But what would I do with my evenings?”

When I had a teenager in the house I tried not to scare away her boyfriends. I was willing to put up with a lot, but not three hours of Sweet Caroline. I, too, would have thrown a bucket of cold water on him after 15 minutes. If she ends up an old maid she can blame me.

I guess an intelligent boy would prepare a list of girls to serenade before he hires the mariachi band, to make sure he gets his money’s worth. At 15 minutes each he needs a list of 12 girls – not accounting for travel time. Do mariachis charge for travel time, or only the time spent actually performing? I don’t suppose they’re going to march all over town for nothing, so he won’t be able to serenade a full dozen girls unless they live quite close together.
