I have used noise cancelling headphones when I had to go somewhere very noisy and I wanted to protect my ears. Not only did they work but I could use then when I wanted to listen to music also.
Noise-cancelling headphones have gotten much better in the last 20 years, but a stock pair of sound-deadening ones are still better at it. But, the cancelling headphones can play music and cancel external noise.
