It’s a shame that the concept of sending the appropriate response for a given emergency is so far over conservative heads. SWAT team to the armed militants holding hostages, and to the teenager threatening suicide, specialists in mental health.
It is amazing how something so PROFOUNDLY stupid can pass an editorial review. I cannot imagine why the Washington Post Writers Group allows its name to be printed on it.
On the one hand I expect Mike’s “principles” and “ethics” to be based on his needs of the moment. FEAR and OUTRAGE get him clicks and rubles from his handlers. So the idea that shifting money from overworked police departments to social workers – when appropriate- must be met with scorn and derision. Previous works from Mike:

“…One more thing: it took the NZ police 36 minutes to respond after getting the first call. Thirty-six minutes. Don’t own a gun if you don’t want to take responsibility for defending yourself and your family from bad men w/ guns. Call the cops and wait. But don’t deny people the right who do. "

suggest that in “Mike world” we are all armed and ready to take on the two pictured here- resolving the conflict LONG before the social workers will arrive. It even seems as if he should be using the current climate to promote responsible gun ownership. His previous ’toons say that citizens shooting back is the ideal.
But on the other hand- what if Mike is going into early onset alzheimers and can’t tell that this goes against his early ideas of how a situation like this would turn out in “Mike World”? He needs frequent reminders that what he’s seeing isn’t really happening. He seems to have trouble understanding others.
It’s a shame that most people can’t see that many who say ‘Defund the Police’ mean to abolish the police. So the humorless and ignorant don’t get this joke.
I’ve been thinking; I see articles occasionally trying to understand why political cartooning is a dying art and I think I have an idea why.
Mass media and cable news has made them irrelevant.
You take Lester here—his talking point isn’t original in the least; Tucker Carlson says the exact same stuff all the time. Varvel and Ramirez and Gorrell do it, too—it seems like more so, actually, since they basically say the same thing. Whoopty-do. And, I guess if I were still a conservative I might say the same thing about more liberal cartoonists—they just crib stuff from Steven Colbert or whatever. It’s not like any of them are changing minds or making any great statements.
I think I read somewhere that the purpose of a political cartoon is to make a point in an exaggerated way in order to stimulate discussion—well, isn’t that what cable talking heads are already doing? And how much “discussion” are these cartoons even stimulating? Look what “discussion” happens on here—the wingnuts tell Mike he’s awesome, the rest of us tell him he’s full of it, and then he occasionally swoops in to say something sanctimonious and clueless about his “haters”, and the cycle begins again. Whoopty-do.
So, what purpose do all these scribblings even serve anymore?
Meanwhile, I suppose Lester has sent the tear gas and machine guns (off panel) to attack the mother who called 911 because her child is having trouble breathing.
Lester would send the SWAT team to deal with the Pandemic. The the Lunatic Right there has never been a problem that can’t be solved by more men with guns.

Social workers would handle the situation a lot better than a bunch of murderous cops!
